What changed — September 18, 2026
Prysmian and Rio Tinto announced Friday that electrical cables made with aluminum produced using ELYSIS inert-anode technology have been contracted for installation at an Amazon data center near Columbus, Ohio. Prysmian calls it the first known use of inert-anode-smelted, low-carbon aluminum in a data center. Reuters independently reported the announcement the same day.
Prysmian says the cable will be manufactured and shipped from its Sedalia, Missouri factory. Rio Tinto supplied the aluminum from Quebec, where the company says the metal used for this cable was produced with hydropower, including the portion made with ELYSIS inert-anode technology. Wesco is participating in distribution and delivery.
The companies did not disclose the value of the cable contract, the volume of cable, the specific conductor sizes or product families, the installation contractor, the exact data-center campus, or a commissioning date. Those details should not be inferred.
The material is new. The procurement model may matter more to contractors.
This is easy to read as a sustainability story about aluminum. For electrical contractors, it is more useful to read it as a specification and supply-chain story.
A hyperscale owner is accepting a novel lower-carbon raw-material pathway inside a mission-critical electrical system. The chain runs from Rio Tinto's aluminum production, through Prysmian's cable manufacturing, through Wesco's distribution role and into an Amazon data center. That means material provenance is moving beyond a corporate sustainability report and into an actual construction product headed to a jobsite.
That does not mean ELYSIS aluminum is about to replace conventional conductors on residential service work. Prysmian said as recently as March that ELYSIS-produced aluminum remained in development and was not yet available in large production quantities. The immediate lesson is narrower: large owners can make carbon, sourcing and traceability attributes part of procurement, and contractors need systems that can preserve those requirements from bid through submittal, purchasing and closeout.

What is actually different about the aluminum
Conventional aluminum smelting uses carbon anodes in the electrolytic process. ELYSIS, a joint venture associated with Alcoa and Rio Tinto, is developing inert-anode technology designed to remove direct greenhouse-gas emissions from that smelting step and produce oxygen instead.
In November 2025, ELYSIS announced the startup of a 450-kiloampere inert-anode cell at Rio Tinto's Alma smelter in Quebec. The company described that as the first implementation of the technology at commercial-size scale, while also making clear that testing would continue to gather data for future commercial deployment.
That distinction matters. A technology can operate at commercial-size scale without being available at mass-market volume. Prysmian reinforced the point in March 2026 when it said ELYSIS-produced aluminum remained in development and was not yet available in large production quantities. Friday's Amazon announcement is therefore a meaningful deployment milestone, but it is not evidence that every contractor can order an equivalent conductor from normal stock tomorrow.
Important terminology: lower-carbon is not the same as zero-carbon cable
The companies' strongest technical claim is specific: the ELYSIS smelting process eliminates direct greenhouse-gas emissions from aluminum smelting and produces oxygen as a by-product. Rio Tinto also says the aluminum supplied for these cables was produced in Quebec using hydropower.
A finished electrical cable still has other inputs, manufacturing steps, transportation, packaging and eventual end-of-life impacts. Dispatch therefore uses "lower-carbon" or "ELYSIS-produced aluminum" rather than describing the cable itself as zero-carbon. Contractors should apply the same discipline when reviewing environmental product claims in bid documents and owner specifications.
For contractors, the bigger change is that raw-material provenance can become a construction requirement
Most electrical estimates are built around performance, code compliance, listed products, manufacturer, availability, labor and price. Large institutional owners are increasingly capable of adding another layer: where the material came from and how it was produced.
When that requirement enters a specification, the electrical contractor becomes part of the evidence chain. Estimators need to know whether a named product has approved equivalents. Project managers need submittal packages that preserve the required attributes. Purchasing teams need distributors that can source the correct lot or manufacturer. Field teams need to prevent substitutions that solve a schedule problem but violate an owner requirement. Closeout teams may need documentation that proves what was actually installed.
The Amazon project makes that workflow concrete because the announced chain is unusually explicit: Rio Tinto supplies the aluminum, Prysmian manufactures the cable, Wesco participates in distribution, and Amazon is the end user. That is closer to a traceable procurement path than a generic promise to buy "sustainable materials."

Wesco's role is a reminder that the distributor can become part of the compliance chain
Prysmian's announcement specifically names Wesco as part of the delivery chain. That matters because a specialized material requirement is only useful if it can move from manufacturer to project without losing the documentation, availability and scheduling controls that made it acceptable in the first place.
For contractors, distributor diligence therefore goes beyond unit price. On a project with owner-specific material requirements, the useful questions include whether the branch can source the exact approved product, whether the reel or lot can be traced, how substitutions are handled, what documentation accompanies delivery, and how far lead times extend if the specified material is not normal stock.
The same operating discipline applies outside sustainability. Buy American requirements, domestic-content rules, project labor requirements, utility-approved equipment lists and customer-specific product standards all create situations where the cheapest electrically equivalent product may not be contractually equivalent.
What this does not mean for residential electricians
Friday's announcement is not a residential branch-circuit wire launch, a code change or a broad replacement for conventional copper or aluminum conductors. Prysmian and Rio Tinto did not announce retail availability, residential applications, contractor pricing or a general distribution rollout for ELYSIS-based cable.
Residential and light-commercial contractors should treat this as an early supply-chain signal rather than a purchasing instruction. The relevance is that material provenance requirements often begin with very large owners and projects before they move into institutional standards, public procurement, utility programs or mainstream product catalogs. Whether that happens here remains to be seen.
Why Amazon is a meaningful proving ground
Amazon says it has invested $70 billion in Ohio since 2010 across infrastructure and employee compensation and that its statewide footprint supports roughly 60,000 indirect jobs across logistics, cloud, retail and operations. Those figures are much broader than this cable project, but they show why an Amazon data-center installation carries more signaling power than a laboratory demonstration.
Large cloud operators buy enormous volumes of power equipment, cable, switchgear, transformers, cooling equipment and backup generation. Their engineering standards can give manufacturers a reference project, force distributors to develop new fulfillment processes and expose contractors to requirements that later appear in other mission-critical work.
Dispatch has already documented that same demand pressure from other angles: Amazon's $2.4 billion initial generator agreement with Generac and the wave of capital moving into transformer and data-center infrastructure. The Prysmian-Rio Tinto project adds raw-material selection to that list.

TradeVulcan perspective: the next material shortage may be a documentation shortage
Contractors are used to treating procurement risk as a question of whether a part is available and what it costs. High-specification work adds a third dimension: whether the product that is available can be proven to satisfy the owner's exact requirement.
As owners add domestic-content rules, carbon targets, traceability requirements and manufacturer-specific standards, the profitable contractor is not simply the one with the best buy price. It is the one whose estimating, purchasing and project-management systems can preserve specification intent without creating rework, rejected submittals or emergency freight.
The Amazon-Prysmian-Rio Tinto project is early evidence of that direction. The material itself may remain niche for some time. The workflow problem is already familiar.
What electrical contractors should do when a project specifies material provenance
- Turn owner sustainability and material-origin requirements into a bid checklist before pricing begins.
- Separate true electrical equivalence from contractual equivalence; an alternate can meet ampacity requirements and still fail the specification.
- Get distributor lead times and documentation capabilities in writing for named or specialty products.
- Carry quote-expiration and substitution language when the specified material has limited or emerging availability.
- Store approved submittals, purchase orders, packing documents and field substitutions under the same project requirement so closeout evidence is easy to assemble.
- Require written owner or engineer approval before substituting a product whose origin, manufacturer or environmental attributes are part of the specification.
- Track whether emerging material requirements create measurable estimating hours, procurement delays or carrying costs, and price those administrative burdens into future work.
