TradeVulcan Dispatch is published by TradeVulcan, which sells lead-management, marketing-attribution and AI workflow software to home-service contractors and uses OpenAI technology in parts of its software stack. TradeVulcan is not affiliated with OpenAI or HubSpot. This article analyzes a developing advertising channel; availability, pricing and contractor-specific economics may change as the products move through testing.
What OpenAI launched — and what is still a test
On Sept. 16, OpenAI announced that Sponsored Agents are being tested with select U.S. advertisers. After seeing a relevant ad in ChatGPT, a user can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, ask follow-up questions and then follow a link to the advertiser's website. OpenAI says that sponsored conversation is separate from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the user's original conversation. The same release also introduced natural-language campaign management through an Ads Manager plugin, AI-assisted creative tools, and integrations with HubSpot as OpenAI's first CRM partner and Shopify as its first ecommerce partner.
For most of the last two decades, contractor digital advertising has been built around one scarce event: the click. A homeowner searches for an electrician, plumber or HVAC company, sees an ad, lands on a page, and then either calls, books, chats or fills out a form. Every system downstream tries to reconstruct what happened after that click.
OpenAI is testing a different shape for the funnel. The ad can become a conversation before the homeowner reaches the website. That conversation can answer questions, explain an offer, gather context and help the customer decide whether to keep moving.
That does not make ChatGPT Ads the same product as Google paid search. The auction, interface and consumer behavior are different. But they compete for the same valuable moment: a person with commercial intent trying to decide what to do next. For contractors, that is why Sponsored Agents matter.
What contractors should know
- Sponsored Agents are being tested with select U.S. advertisers, not universally rolled out to every business.
- The user chooses whether to enter the sponsored conversation; OpenAI says it is clearly labeled and separate from independent ChatGPT answers.
- Advertisers can now use natural-language prompts to create, update and analyze campaigns through an Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT.
- HubSpot is OpenAI's first CRM partner for ChatGPT Ads, allowing connected businesses to create ads, track performance and follow up on leads from HubSpot.
- OpenAI's Ad Tools Terms say the advertiser remains responsible for a Sponsored Agent's content, configuration, actions and output.
- For contractors, the biggest operating issue is attribution: the future lead record may need to preserve the AI discovery surface, sponsored conversation, campaign, CRM handoff, booked job and collected revenue as separate facts.
- The opportunity is richer qualification before handoff; the risk is letting another platform own more of the customer journey without measuring whether it produces better booked-job economics.
A lead form asks for fields. An agent can ask why.
A conventional contractor form might ask for name, phone number, ZIP code and service type. The form does not know that the breaker is hot to the touch, the furnace has failed twice this month, the homeowner is leaving town tomorrow or the water heater is leaking onto finished flooring unless the customer volunteers that information.
A conversational interface can ask follow-up questions. In theory, that creates a better handoff because urgency, symptoms, timing, property context and buying intent can be captured before a CSR ever answers the phone.
But the contractor should not confuse a richer conversation with a richer lead until the data actually reaches the operating system. If the final CRM record contains only a name and number, the intelligence gathered upstream is mostly stranded. If it arrives as structured context tied to a durable campaign and source identifier, it can change how the office books, routes and follows up.
How the paid lead path can change
| Stage | Traditional paid-search funnel | Sponsored-agent funnel | What the contractor needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intent | Keyword/search query and ad impression | Question or conversation in ChatGPT | Originating surface and campaign ID |
| Qualification | Landing page, form or first phone call | Follow-up questions inside sponsored conversation | Structured project context and consent |
| Handoff | Form submit, call or booking widget | Agent-to-site or CRM lead handoff | Durable source and conversation metadata |
| Booking | CSR or online scheduler | CSR, scheduler or connected workflow | Booking outcome tied back to campaign |
| Revenue | CRM plus ad-platform conversion import | AI surface plus CRM plus job system | Completed and collected revenue attribution |
HubSpot is the part contractors should watch most closely
The Sponsored Agent itself gets the attention, but the HubSpot integration may be more important operationally. OpenAI says businesses using HubSpot can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance and follow up on leads directly inside HubSpot. HubSpot describes it as the first CRM integration with ChatGPT Ads.
That points toward an advertising model where campaign execution and customer context are not separate systems. A marketer can build the campaign, see the lead, understand the account context and continue the workflow without exporting a CSV or waiting for a nightly sync.
Home-service software will have to meet the same standard. Contractors should expect any serious future ad channel to connect directly into campaign attribution, call tracking, forms, chat, booking, CRM data and revenue outcomes. A lead source that cannot show the path from spend to completed job will be increasingly difficult to defend.
The advertiser owns the agent's promises
There is a practical reason contractors should treat a sponsored agent differently from an ordinary ad headline. OpenAI's Ad Tools Terms say the advertiser remains responsible for the Sponsored Agent's content, configurations, actions and output.
That means a contractor should not allow an agent to casually invent financing terms, rebate eligibility, emergency-response times, warranty coverage, service-area promises or pricing. Those claims are not harmless chatbot flavor. They are part of the advertising experience the business is responsible for.
The operating discipline should look more like a trained CSR script than an experimental prompt: approved offers, current service areas, verified hours, explicit escalation rules, controlled pricing logic and clear handoff paths when the agent is uncertain.
What to prepare before AI-native ads reach your market
- Make sure every campaign has a durable source and campaign identifier that survives through the CRM and job record.
- Track booked, completed and collected revenue—not just leads or form fills.
- Keep service areas, hours, financing terms, warranties, offers and exclusions in structured, current data rather than scattered web copy.
- Define what an AI agent may quote, what it may explain and what must escalate to a human.
- Preserve call tracking, form tracking, chat and booking events so AI-originated leads can be compared against Google, Meta, LSA and aggregators on the same scorecard.
- Measure cost per completed job and gross profit after ad cost before expanding spend.
- Do not assume a new conversational channel is exclusive. Ask how routing, auction mechanics, attribution windows and lead ownership work before committing budget.
The next battle is not for the click. It is for the conversation before the click.
Contractors spent years optimizing landing pages because the landing page was where intent became a lead. Sponsored Agents suggest that boundary is moving.
If the homeowner can ask questions, explain the problem, compare options and become qualified inside the advertising surface itself, the website may become one step in the funnel rather than the center of it. That makes the contractor's data layer more important, not less. The business still needs accurate services, pricing rules, offers, attribution, booking logic and revenue measurement behind the conversation.
The winners in this channel will not simply be the contractors who buy ChatGPT Ads first. They will be the ones who can tell whether an AI-originated conversation became a profitable job—and then feed that result back into the next campaign decision.
